History of SRISD

History of Sam Rayburn ISD

Sam Rayburn Independent School District (SRISD) serves approximately 500 students in the close-knit community of Ivanhoe, Texas, located in northeast Fannin County. From prekindergarten through high school, all students share a single campus—creating a strong sense of family and community that defines our district.

SRISD was established in 1964 through the consolidation of the North Fannin and Telephone school districts and was named in honor of Mr. Sam Rayburn. Affectionately known as “Mr. Sam,” Rayburn was one of Texas’ most respected statesmen. A powerful and influential political figure of the 20th century, he served in the U.S. Congress for 48 years, including 17 years as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives—the longest tenure in U.S. history.

Despite his prominence in Washington, D.C., Mr. Sam frequently returned to his Fannin County home, where he found peace on his 900-acre ranch just west of Bonham. His restored home now serves as the Sam Rayburn House Museum, open to the public and dedicated to preserving his legacy.

Mr. Sam Rayburn was a remarkable leader known for his fairness, integrity, and devotion to public service. Sam Rayburn ISD is proud to carry forward those same values, instilling them in the students of our district as we honor his enduring legacy.

Upon consolidation in 1964, Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Steele generously donated the land upon which Sam Rayburn ISD was established. The original bell from North Fannin School was preserved and remains prominently displayed in the high school courtyard, symbolizing the district’s enduring respect for its heritage and the communities from which it was formed.

Although geographically rural, SRISD has long been recognized throughout northeast Texas for its leadership in technology, academic excellence, and athletic achievement. The district’s committed faculty and administration strive to provide a rigorous and comprehensive educational experience that equips students for future success. In 2016, Sam Rayburn ISD was officially classified as a University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 2A school, reflecting both its steady growth and continued pursuit of excellence.
